Before you order furniture

Three measurements decide whether a piece works: the space it will sit in, the space it needs when it is in use — a recliner tilted back, a sofa bed opened out, a drop-leaf top folded down — and the narrowest point on the route in, which is usually a doorway or a stairwell turn. Every product page lists assembled and packed dimensions so you can check all three before ordering. Where a piece needs fixing to a wall, such as a tall bookcase or a floating TV unit, check what your wall is made of before you choose the fixings.

The other figure worth reading properly is the maximum load. We counted it across 844 products in eight of these collections: 807 publish one, but 566 of those give a single number with no indication of which surface it covers, and the gap between the headline figure and a single shelf or tray is routinely tenfold. Most larger pieces arrive flat-packed with fixings and instructions. Assembly requirements are stated on each product page.

How do I check something will fit through my door?

Compare the packed dimensions, not the assembled ones, with the narrowest point on the route in — including the turn at the top of a staircase.

What if an item arrives damaged?
