Extra storage on wheels, and a surface to put things down on. Kitchen trolleys and island carts give a small kitchen somewhere to stack, somewhere to land a tray, and somewhere to wheel out of the way afterwards — including drop-leaf tops that fold out when you need the space.
Kitchen trolley and island types
- Drop-leaf island carts — a folding worktop that doubles the surface when open.
- Trolleys with basket drawers — deep wire baskets for vegetables, packets and tins.
- Carts with wine racks — bottle storage built into the frame alongside shelves.
- 3-tier kitchen trolleys — the standard rolling cart for tins, pans and cleaning kit.
- Slim kitchen carts — 5-tier wood-effect designs for narrow galley kitchens.
- Freestanding pantry cupboards — closed storage with door racks.
How to choose a kitchen trolley
Be clear with yourself about whether you want storage or a prep surface, because most carts — ours included — are the first thing rather than the second. A UK worktop is about 90 cm high, and of the twelve wheeled kitchen carts across our range, the six with a genuine flat top sit at 74.5, 76, 77.5, 82, 83 and 96.5 cm. The median is just under 80 cm, roughly 10 cm below worktop height, which is comfortable for putting things down and uncomfortable for chopping. If prep height matters to you, measure before you order.
Then check the load rating for the top surface rather than the whole unit. Only two of our carts publish a top-only figure and they are 2 kg and 3 kg, while the same units are rated 50 kg and 11 kg overall — a whole-unit figure bundles every basket, drawer and shelf and tells you nothing about the top. Where a top is not rated separately, treat it as a landing surface rather than somewhere to stand an appliance. Check too whether the top is sealed and food-safe, and whether the frame is powder-coated steel if it sits near a sink. Drop-leaf tops need clearance on the folding side, so plan where the cart parks as well as where it works. Our guide to where to put the microwave in a small kitchen sets out the heights and load figures for every cart here.
Kitchen trolley FAQs
Can a kitchen trolley work as a small island?
As storage and a serving surface, yes, and a drop-leaf model gives you a fold-out top without the commitment of a fixed island. As a second prep surface it depends on the height: none of the carts in this range with a flat top lands at the 90 cm a UK worktop sits at, so you will be working 7–15 cm lower than you are used to.
Can you chop directly on the top?
Only on models with a sealed butcher-block or wood top, and a board is still kinder to the finish. Check the material on the product page.
How much can a kitchen trolley hold?
Shelf and total load capacities are listed per product, and the top surface is often rated far lower than the unit as a whole. Put the heaviest items on the bottom tier to keep the cart stable when it moves.
