Vases add shape and texture to a room with or without flowers. A ceramic vase can soften a shelf display, a bottle shape gives a few stems more structure, and a large floor vase brings height beside lower furniture. Choose the position and overall scale before deciding on a finish.

Explore decorative vases in ceramic and metal, including white and stone-effect surfaces, blue botanical patterns and hammered black finishes. Use the individual dimensions and water-use guidance to choose between a decorative object, a vase for faux stems and a design suitable for fresh flowers.

Choose a vase shape around the arrangement

The opening matters as much as the height. A bottle vase with a narrow neck can support a small number of longer stems, while a broader opening gives a fuller arrangement more room to spread. An urn or handled amphora has a strong outline even when left empty. Start by deciding whether the vase or the flowers should be the main feature.

A single vase can be enough for a smaller surface. When grouping several, vary the heights or shapes and keep a connection through colour or finish. Leave clear space around the arrangement rather than filling every part of a console or shelf.

Ceramic vases and metal vases are different materials

Ceramic can have a crackle glaze, a matt surface or a textured stone effect. Metal vases can introduce a hammered texture or a darker outline. The finish is not always the construction: a silver-effect vase may be ceramic, and a stone-effect vase is not necessarily made from natural stone. The material in the product specification is the reliable way to distinguish them.

White vases and other pale finishes work with both colourful flowers and restrained foliage. Blue botanical decoration adds pattern to the vessel itself, so a simpler stem arrangement can leave that detail visible. Black metal creates a stronger silhouette against a lighter wall.

Large vases need a footprint and weight check

Measure the width and depth of the surface or floor position, not just the space above it. The vase body may be wider than the base, and tall stems add to the final height. Check product weight before placing a substantial ceramic vase on a shelf or smaller table. Our guide to reading furniture load ratings explains why the supporting surface matters.

Two examples show the difference in scale: the blue and white floral ceramic vase is 31cm high and 21cm wide and deep, while the matt black hammered floor vase with lid is 80cm high and 31cm wide and deep. These are very different placements even though both are decorative vases.

For floor vases, leave a clear route past the arrangement and allow the full outline of any branches or foliage. A lid or handles can change how a vase is used, so check the included pieces before planning an arrangement.

Vase questions

Can all ceramic vases hold water?

No. Ceramic construction alone does not establish that a vase is watertight. Some decorative designs are intended for faux flowers or require a separate water-retaining liner. Follow the water-use guidance for the individual vase.

Do I need a liner for fresh flowers?

Use one where the product guidance requires it. For example, the antique white Greek-style vase and the 26cm matt white ceramic vase specify a florist's cellophane liner for water. Do not assume that a glazed appearance removes that requirement.

What size vase should I choose for a console?

Check the whole body width and depth against the usable surface, then add the height of the intended stems. Leave space for neighbouring objects and avoid an arrangement that obstructs a walkway or an important view across the room.

Can I display a vase without flowers?

Yes. A textured surface, handled form or patterned glaze can provide enough interest by itself. An empty vase is also useful when you want a decorative shape without the height of an arrangement.

Are flowers and foliage included?

Only where the listing expressly includes them. Styled photographs can show flowers and other accessories alongside a vase; use the included-items information to confirm what you are buying.
