Planning your bedroom layout

Start with the bed, then plan storage around it. Leave around 60–70 cm of walking space on each side of the bed and in front of wardrobes and drawers so doors open fully.

Storage that fits

  • Wardrobes – measure ceiling height and the depth needed for doors to open; around 55–60 cm deep fits most hangers.
  • Chests of drawers – tall, narrow chests save floor space; wide, low ones double as a dressing surface.
  • Under-bed and ottoman storage – ideal for small rooms.

How much space do I need around a bed?

Aim for at least 60 cm on each side and at the foot of the bed so you can move around and make the bed easily.

Do flat-pack wardrobes and drawers need fixing to the wall?

Tall furniture should always be secured with the anti-tip fixings supplied, especially in homes with children.

Does bedroom furniture need assembling?

Most pieces arrive flat-packed with instructions. Larger items such as wardrobes are a two-person job.
