Which type of chair do you need?
If the chair is for reading, conversation or a corner of the room, a fixed-frame armchair or accent chair is the right shape and the better value. If getting out of a low seat is difficult, a power lift base is worth prioritising — it is the one feature you cannot add later. If the chair is for unwinding at the end of the day, a massage recliner combines reclining and vibration massage in one piece.
Whichever you choose, check three numbers against the person using the chair. Seat height: 41.5 cm to 47.5 cm suits most British adults sitting with their feet flat, and anything higher is easier to stand from but may leave shorter users' feet hanging. Seat depth: if it is deeper than about 48 cm you will want a cushion behind the lower back — our armchair buying guide explains how to measure it. Weight capacity: published on almost every listing, and worth reading rather than assuming.
For anything that reclines, the space it needs is not the figure most people expect. Across our 146 recliners the chair gets a median 63 cm deeper from upright to fully reclined, reaching 93 cm to 170 cm front to back, and where a recommended wall clearance is published at all it ranges from 20 cm to 80 cm. Measure the reclined depth against your floor space rather than working from a rule of thumb.
Chair FAQs
What is the difference between a recliner and a lift chair?
A recliner tilts back. A lift chair also tilts the whole base forward to help you rise to standing. 46 of our 146 recliners have the lift function.
Do massage chairs need to be plugged in?
Yes — the massage, heat and any powered recline or lift run from mains power. Manual-recline models still recline without power, but the massage will not work. Plan a socket within reach of where the chair will stand.
What seat height suits most people?
41.5 cm to 47.5 cm, which matches most British adults' lower-leg length with shoes on. Higher seats are easier to stand from, which is why riser recliners sit above that band on purpose; lower seats feel more relaxed but are harder to get out of.
How much room does a recliner need?
Work from the reclined depth on the product page, which across our range runs 93 cm to 170 cm, and add the manufacturer's wall clearance if one is given. Recliner-and-footstool sets need the least, powered two-section footrests the most.
