Which type of garden furniture is right for you?

Rattan sofa and corner sets

The most sociable choice for a larger patio – sofas, armchairs and a coffee table for relaxing, often with cushions included. Corner sets make the most of an L-shaped space.

Garden dining sets

A table with matching chairs for eating outside. Count the seats you need most weekends, then check the table length – around 60 cm per person is a good guide.

Bistro sets

A small table and two chairs for balconies, courtyards and sunny corners – ideal for a morning coffee or a glass of wine for two.

Sun loungers, swing seats and hammocks

For switching off. Reclining loungers suit lawns and decks, while swing seats and hammocks add a relaxed, holiday feel.

Materials and British weather

  • PE rattan is a synthetic weave that doesn't soak up water the way natural cane does.
  • Powder-coated steel and aluminium frames resist rust; aluminium is lighter to move around.
  • Acacia and other hardwoods look warm and natural, and benefit from a yearly oil.
  • Cushions should come indoors in wet weather and over winter.

Measuring your space

Mark out the footprint with chalk or string before you buy. Leave 60–90 cm around a dining table so chairs pull out easily, and keep a clear path to doors. On a balcony, check the weight limit first.

Garden furniture: your questions answered

Can rattan garden furniture be left outside all year?

Synthetic rattan on a metal frame is made for outdoor use, but covering it or storing it in a shed or garage over winter will help it last much longer. Always bring cushions inside.

Should I cover my garden furniture in winter?

Yes. A breathable, waterproof cover protects against frost, leaves and bird droppings and keeps furniture ready for spring. Browse our garden furniture covers.

What size garden table do I need for six people?

A rectangular table of about 150–200 cm usually seats six. Allow around 60 cm per person and 60–90 cm of space behind each chair.

How do I clean rattan garden furniture?

Brush off loose dirt, wipe with warm soapy water, rinse and let it dry fully before covering. Avoid pressure washers and harsh chemicals, which can damage the weave.
