Above: five dark evenings, five table lamps, and one paper-cutout friend who refuses to put the big light on.
Came here from our "Which lamp are you?" video? All five lamps are below. You can also search LAMPS317 on 10grains.co.uk to see them side by side.
The short answer: a table lamp is the cheapest way to change how a room feels after dark, but the right one depends on where it lives and who you are. Pick your type, then check the one number that matters for it:
- 1"One more chapter" (you read in bed): a slim lamp for a tiny bedside table. Incia fluted wooden lamp, 53 cm.
- 2Still on holiday (coastal at heart): a blue glass base. Ocean Shadows glass lamp, 63.5 cm.
- 3A bit extra (the hallway is a runway): a tall clear glass orb. Lunel glass orb lamp, 79 cm.
- 4Country weekend, every weekend: an animal lamp with antlers. Stonewashed stag head lamp, 45 cm.
- 5The conversation starter (you like people to ask): an unusual sculptural base. Black knot lamp with hessian shade, 51 cm.
The clocks have gone back, it's dark by half four, and every living room in Britain is having the same argument: big light on, or big light off? The big light wins on practicality and loses on everything else. It flattens the room, shows up every crumb on the rug and makes the sofa look like a dentist's waiting room.
The fix isn't a brighter bulb. It's a lamp, or two, at the height you actually sit at. Low, warm pools of light are what make a room feel cosy in winter, and a table lamp is also the easiest bit of "personality" you can add to a room without painting anything.
So we've sorted five lamps by the kind of person (and room) they suit. Each one gets the measurements that matter, the honest catches, and a real product photo next to the scene. There's a quick quiz if you'd rather we just told you.

How we matched the lamps
We're the retailer, so we're not pretending to be neutral, and we haven't tested these lamps in a lab. What we did was read every listing: overall height and width, base material, shade material, weight, and what's in the box. Then we asked which of those details matters most for each kind of room and person. Every figure below comes from the supplier's published specifications, and every lamp gets a "worth knowing" section, because no lamp suits every room.
1"One more chapter": a slim wooden bedside lamp
It's 11pm. You said you'd stop at the end of the chapter two chapters ago. The trouble with reading in bed is that most bedside tables are tiny: a phone, a glass of water and a book already fill them, and a chunky lamp base just gets knocked over in the dark. You need light at the right height with almost no footprint.

Incia Fluted Wooden Table Lamp with Linen Shade – 53cm
A slender fluted wooden base on a 12 × 12 cm footprint, topped with a linen shade.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits you
It barely takes up any table. The whole lamp is just 12 cm wide and deep, so it fits the corner of even the smallest bedside table and leaves room for your book, phone and water.
It's a sensible height for reading. At 53 cm tall on a standard bedside table, the shade sits around shoulder height when you're sitting up in bed, which is where you want the light to fall. It also suits a narrow console or a shelf.
It goes with almost anything. The grey-washed wood and linen shade look soft rather than shouty, from Scandi to country-chic. Buy two for a matching pair either side of the bed.
Worth knowing
No bulb in the box. It takes a standard E27 screw bulb, which isn't included. For reading in bed, a warm white bulb (around 2700K) is the cosy choice.
It's light. At 1 kg it's easy to move, but a slim, light lamp is also easier to nudge. Keep the cable tidy behind the table.
Partial assembly. You'll fit the shade yourself when it arrives.

2Still on holiday: a blue glass table lamp
Your body is in a rainy British November. Your heart is on a beach in August. The house is full of shells, there's a sun hat on the hook that hasn't been worn since the summer, and you'd like your lighting to keep the dream alive. Enter a lamp with a base that looks like the sea.

Ocean Shadows Glass Table Lamp with Linen Shade – 63.5cm
A rounded blue glass base in layered light and dark tones, with metal details and a linen shade.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits you
It's the sea, in glass. The base fades through deep blue, pale blue and white, like the shallows on a sunny day. It gives the lamp real depth without a busy pattern.
It works in daylight too. Plenty of lamps disappear when they're off. A coloured glass base is a decorative object in its own right, so it earns its spot on the console even at noon.
It's a good living-room size. At 63.5 cm tall it suits a console, sideboard or a larger side table by the sofa. Pair it with pale wood and neutral textiles for the full coastal look.
Worth knowing
It's wide. The shade makes it 43 cm across, so measure your table. As a rule of thumb, the shade shouldn't be much wider than the table top.
Glass needs a gentle clean. A soft, dry or slightly damp cloth on the base when the lamp is off and cool.
Check the bulb details on the listing before you order, so you have the right one ready.

Size: 43 W × 43 D × 63.5 H cm · Weight: 1.82 kg
Materials: blue glass base with metal details, linen shade · inline switch
3A bit extra: a tall glass orb statement lamp
You don't do "subtle". You put your earrings in using the hallway mirror, you leave the house in sequins on a Tuesday, and you think the first thing guests see when they walk in should make them say "ooh". You need a statement table lamp, and it needs to be tall.

Lunel Glass Orb Table Lamp with Edged Linen Shade – 79cm
A big clear glass orb with brass-toned details and an edged linen shade, 79 cm tall.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits you
It's properly tall. At 79 cm, Lunel holds its own on a hallway console or a big sideboard, where a small lamp would look lost. On a standard console it puts the light up at head height, which is flattering for that last check in the mirror.
The clear orb keeps it light. Even though it's a big lamp, you can see straight through the glass base, so it doesn't feel heavy in a narrow hallway the way a solid ceramic base would.
Brass-tone and linen is a classic pairing. The warm metallic details and the edged linen shade work in a dark, moody hallway or a pale, neutral one.
Worth knowing
It needs room. The shade makes it 48 cm across, so it suits a console or sideboard rather than a small bedside table.
It's a weighty lamp. At 4.5 kg it feels solid and stable, but lift it by the base, not the shade, when you move it.
"Brass" is the colour. The details are a brass tone, not solid brass. Fingerprints show on clear glass, so keep a soft cloth handy.

Materials: clear glass orb base with brass-tone details, edged linen shade
4Country weekend, every weekend: a stag head table lamp
You own wellies that have never seen a field. There's a wax jacket on the hook, a tartan throw on the armchair, and if you could have a real fire you would. You want your lamp to say "country cottage" even if the view outside is a bus stop. Antlers will do it.

Stonewashed Stag Head Table Lamp with Linen Shade – 45cm
A sculpted stag head, antlers and all, in a softly aged stonewashed finish with a linen shade.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits you
It's an animal lamp that isn't a novelty. The stonewashed finish gives the antlers and face an aged, carved look, so it reads as a countryside piece rather than a joke.
It's compact. 45 cm tall and 20 cm across, it fits a small side table next to an armchair, a bedside or a desk in the study. Low and warm is exactly what you want next to a reading chair.
It goes with the cosy stuff. Leather, tartan, wool, oak and a pile of books. It also works as a single quirky piece in an otherwise plain room.
Worth knowing
It's resin, not stone. The base is resin with a stonewashed finish, which keeps it light (1.3 kg).
Antlers collect dust. Give them a quick go with a soft brush or a dry paintbrush now and then.
It's small. On a big console it may look lost; it's happiest on a side table or bedside.

Size: 20 W × 20 D × 45 H cm · Weight: 1.3 kg
Materials: resin base in a stonewashed brown finish, linen shade · indoor use only
5The conversation starter: a black knot lamp
You like a home with a few things that make people stop and ask. Not loud, just interesting. This is that lamp. Fair warning: at least one guest will try to untie it.

Black Knot Table Lamp with Hessian Shade – 51cm
A sculptural black knot in metal, with a textured hessian drum shade.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits you
It's a sculpture that happens to be a lamp. The tied-knot base is the kind of shape you'd expect in a gallery shop, and it looks good switched off as well as on.
Smooth and textured, black and natural. The matte black base against the woven hessian shade is a simple contrast that suits modern, rustic and boho rooms alike.
It's a useful size. 51 cm tall and 30.5 cm across: big enough to make a point on a side table or bedside cabinet, not so big that it takes over.
Worth knowing
Hessian is a rougher, natural weave. It gives a warm, textured glow rather than a crisp one, and it's best dusted with a soft brush.
It's metal. The base is weighty for its size (2.6 kg in total) and it has an inline switch on the cable.
No, it doesn't untie. It's a sculpted base shaped like a knot, not a real one. Your guests will check anyway.

Glass, wood, resin or metal: what the lamp base changes
Most table lamps have a similar fabric shade. The base is where they differ, and it changes more than the look.
- Glass table lamps (2 and 3) catch and bounce light, so they look good on and off. Clear glass feels light in a small space; coloured glass adds a block of colour. They need a gentle clean and careful handling.
- Wood (1) is warm, soft-looking and usually light, which suits bedside tables and calm, natural rooms.
- Resin (4) is what makes sculpted shapes like animal lamps possible. It's light for its size and takes detailed finishes such as stonewashing.
- Metal (5) is the sculptural, modern option. It's often heavier for its size, which helps it stand firm on a side table.
Three things to check before you buy any table lamp
Whichever type you are, these matter more than the colour of the shade.
Height
Sitting down, the bottom of the shade should be around shoulder to eye level, so you see the glow, not the bulb. That's why short lamps suit bedsides and tall ones suit consoles.
Width
The shade shouldn't be much wider than the table top, or it'll overhang and get knocked. Our five run from a 12 cm footprint to a 48 cm shade.
Socket and bulb
Check there's a socket within reach of the cable, and which bulb the lamp takes. For cosy evenings, warm white (around 2700K) beats a cool daylight bulb.
What we left out, and why
Floor lamps. Great for lighting a whole corner, but they're a different decision with different measurements. Browse our floor lamps if that's what the room needs.
Rechargeable and battery lamps. Handy for tables with no socket nearby, but they're a separate category with their own catches (run time, charging). None of these five are cordless.
Tiny accent lamps. Lovely on a shelf, but too small to be the main lamp in a living room or to read by.

Table lamps: frequently asked questions
What size table lamp do I need for a bedside table?
Measure the table top first. A slim base leaves room for your phone, water and book, and a lamp of around 45 to 55 cm on a standard bedside table usually puts the shade near shoulder height when you sit up in bed. Our Incia fluted lamp is 53 cm tall on a 12 × 12 cm footprint.
How tall should a table lamp be in a living room?
It depends on the table it sits on. As a rule of thumb, when you're sitting on the sofa the bottom of the shade should be around eye level, so you see the glow rather than the bulb. Taller lamps (60 cm and up) suit consoles and sideboards; shorter ones suit side tables next to a chair.
Are glass table lamps a good idea?
Yes, if you want a lamp that looks good when it's switched off. Clear glass keeps a big lamp feeling light, and coloured glass adds a block of colour. They need a gentle clean and careful handling, and some are heavy: our Lunel glass orb lamp weighs 4.5 kg.
What bulb should I use in a table lamp?
Check the fitting on the listing first; many table lamps, including our Incia lamp, take a standard E27 screw bulb. For a cosy evening glow, choose warm white, around 2700K. Cooler, daylight-style bulbs suit desks and task lighting better.
Do table lamps come with a bulb?
Not always. Some listings say clearly that the bulb isn't included (our Incia lamp, for example), so check before you order and have one ready.
What is a statement table lamp?
A lamp that's meant to be noticed: bigger than usual, a striking material like glass or sculpted metal, or an unusual shape. It works best as the single bold piece on a console or side table, with simpler things around it.
