The short answer: a slim console table is 25 to 35 cm deep, and most stand 75 to 90 cm tall. Take the table's depth off your hall width and keep about 90 cm clear to walk, or at least 76 cm, the width of a standard UK door. If that leaves less than 25 cm for the table, you want a shelf, not a table.

The British hallway was designed by someone who had never met a coat. It has to hold the keys, the post, the shoes, the umbrella nobody claims and a person trying to get past all of them with a bag for life in each hand. So you measure up for a console table, find one that looks lovely online, and discover that "narrow" meant narrow compared with an aircraft carrier.

The width of a console table gets all the attention, but in a hallway the depth is the number that matters. Five centimetres too deep and you will meet that corner with your hip every morning for the next ten years. This guide starts with depth, then works outwards. Set your space in the finder and the gallery shows only the tables that fit. Every photo is a real product photo, and every price is live.

How deep should a console table be for a hallway?

Go for 35 cm deep or less in most UK hallways, and 30 cm or less if the hall is under about 110 cm wide. The sum is simple: hall width minus table depth equals your walkway. Here is what that looks like from above.

A 120 cm hallway from above, drawn to scale Three console depths in a 120 cm wide hallway. A 26.5 cm table leaves 93.5 cm to walk, a 35 cm table leaves 85 cm and a 40 cm table leaves 80 cm. A 76 cm door is shown for comparison. A 120 cm hallway, seen from above 26.5 cm 93.5 cm to walk 35 cm 85 cm to walk 40 cm 80 cm to walk 76 cm door All drawn to scale, walls in black.

Your walkway is your hall width minus the table's depth. A 40 cm table is only 13.5 cm deeper than the slimmest here, but you feel every one of those centimetres with a pushchair or a shopping bag.

Try it with your own hall. Slide to your width and see what each depth leaves you.

How do you measure for a console table?

Measure the hall at its narrowest point. Usually that's by the stairs or the radiator, not the middle of the wall. Skirting boards also push a table a centimetre or two off the wall, so count them.

Do the sum. Hall width minus table depth should leave about 90 cm. If it leaves less than 76 cm, go slimmer or go without.

Open the door. Check the swing of the front door and any door opposite. A table in the arc of a door is a very short relationship.

Mark it out. Put masking tape on the floor at the table's size and walk past it for a day, carrying things. It's the cheapest test you will ever run.

Check the way in. The Reed, Lennox and both Haldon tables come with a two-person delivery team, who will contact you to arrange a date. The Lennox arrives fully assembled, so measure doorways and any tight turn.

Which console table suits which space?

Depth first, then width. Choose drawers for keys and post so the top doesn't become the Pile.

A short wall wants a short table. Curved tiers have no front corners to clip.

Keep it shorter than the sofa. It gives you somewhere for a lamp and a drink when the sofa floats in the room.

A long, thin table makes a long, thin hall look intentional. Open legs keep it from feeling like a wall of furniture.

Drawers, cupboards or just a shelf?

  • Drawers are the point of a hallway table for most people. Keys, post and chargers go in, the top stays clear, and the house looks like one where things are under control.
  • Cupboards hide bigger things, but hinged doors need room to swing out. On a slim table, that's still a smaller swing than on a deep one. Only the Reed has them here.
  • A lower shelf is shoe and basket territory. It keeps the floor clear, but check the shelf height before you promise your boots a home. The listings don't give shelf clearance.
  • Nothing at all looks lightest. The Haldon Trestle has open space under the top, which suits a table used for display.

What height should a console table be?

Most console tables are 75 to 90 cm tall, and anything in that range works in a hallway. Height matters more when something sits around it. Behind a sofa, match the sofa back or go a few centimetres lower. Under a window, check the sill. Over a radiator, don't: a table that blocks the heat wastes it, and a painted finish won't enjoy the warmth either.

What size mirror goes above a console table?

Pick a mirror about two-thirds to three-quarters of the table's width, and hang it so the bottom edge sits about 15 to 20 cm above the top. That leaves room for a lamp or a bowl for keys. On a 110 cm table, that's a mirror around 75 to 80 cm wide. Browse our mirrors if you need one.

Do you need to fix a slim console table to the wall?

It's a good idea if you have young children or pets that climb. A slim table has a narrow base, so it tips more easily than a deep one, especially with drawers pulled out. The listings here don't state a maximum load or mention wall fixings, so keep heavy things low and don't sit on it, however nice the coat-removal seat would be. Our guide to wall fixings and what your wall can take explains which plugs suit plasterboard, brick and block.

Slim console tables: your questions answered

How deep is a slim console table?

A slim console table is usually 25 to 35 cm deep. Anything around 40 cm is a standard console. The slimmest in this guide is 26.5 cm deep, followed by 30 cm and 33 cm.

What is the standard height of a console table?

Most console tables are 75 to 90 cm tall. The tables in this guide run from 76 to 88 cm, which puts the top roughly at hip height for most adults and makes it an easy place to drop keys.

Can you put a console table in a narrow hallway?

Yes, if the walkway still works. Subtract the table's depth from the hall width and aim to keep about 90 cm clear, or at least 76 cm, which is about the width of a standard UK door. In a 100 cm hall that leaves only 24 cm for the table, so below about 100 cm a wall shelf is usually the better choice.

How high should a console table be behind a sofa?

Choose a table about the same height as the sofa back, or a few centimetres lower. It should also be no longer than the sofa, so it looks attached rather than left behind by the previous owners.

What is the difference between a console table and a sideboard?

A console table is a narrow table on legs, usually with open space underneath and perhaps a drawer or shelf. A sideboard has enclosed cupboards and sits closer to the floor, so it stores more but looks heavier.

Should a console table be fixed to the wall?

If you have young children or the table is tall and shallow, it is sensible to fix it. Slim tables have a narrow base, so they tip more easily than deep ones. Check your wall type before drilling.
