Above: five Christmas trees, five living situations, and one paper-cutout friend who has lived in all of them.
Came here from our "Which Christmas tree person are you?" video? All five trees are below. You can also search TREE319 on 10grains.co.uk to see them side by side.
The short answer: the right artificial Christmas tree depends on your space and how much decorating you actually want to do. Pick your type, then check the height, width and lights below:
- 1The traditionalist (your own baubles, your own lights): 6ft Geneva fir, 1610 tips, 80 cm wide.
- 2Can't face decorating (done for you): 5ft pre-lit, pre-decorated gold tree with remote.
- 3Wants snow, gets drizzle (a white Christmas indoors): 6ft super flocked tree, 122 cm wide.
- 4No floor space (full height, small footprint): 6ft slim pencil tree, 63 cm wide.
- 5Tiny flat, big spirit (no floor, no socket): 90 cm pre-lit tabletop tree, battery powered.
Everybody has a Christmas tree personality. Some people decorate the same way every year, with baubles that have been in the family for decades. Some want it done, lit and glowing with as little effort as possible. Some are still hoping for snow. And some live somewhere where a normal tree simply won't fit.
Artificial Christmas trees come in more shapes than you'd think: full trees for a proper corner, slim or pencil trees for tight spaces, flocked trees with fake snow on the branches, pre-lit trees with the lights already on, and tabletop trees for when there's no floor to spare.
So we've matched five of ours to five kinds of Christmas. Each one gets the sizes that matter, the honest catches, and a real product photo next to the scene. Or take the quiz and we'll tell you which tree person you are.

How we matched the trees
We're the retailer, so we're not pretending to be neutral, and we haven't put these up in our own living rooms. What we did was read every listing: height, width, base size, number of tips, lights, power and set-up time. Then we asked which of those matters most for each kind of Christmas. Every figure below comes from the supplier's published specifications, and every tree gets a "worth knowing" section, because no tree suits every room.
1The traditionalist: a 6ft Geneva fir
You have a box of baubles older than some of your relatives. Each one has a story and a correct branch. The tree goes up on the same weekend every year, and you'd rather start with a plain green tree than one somebody else has already decorated. This one is for you.

6ft Geneva Fir Hinged Christmas Tree with 1610 Tips and Steel Stand
A full, plain green 6ft tree with 1610 tips, ready for your own decorations.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits you
It's a blank canvas. It comes unlit and undecorated, so your own lights and baubles do all the talking. Nothing to clash with, nothing to work around.
Full without being enormous. It stands 180 cm tall and 80 cm across. That's slimmer than a lot of 6ft trees, so it fits a living-room corner, but 1610 PE and PVC tips keep it looking dense.
Quick to put up, sturdy once it is. The branches are pre-attached on hinges and drop into place, and the heavy-duty steel stand is 45 cm across and folds away after Christmas.
Worth knowing
Fluffing takes a while. The listing says to allow 30 to 50 minutes to shape the branches. Put some music on.
Bring your own lights. It's unlit, so you'll need a set of tree lights. That's the point for most traditionalists.
Need it taller? There's a 7ft version, listed separately.
Key specs
Size: 180 cm tall · 80 cm diameter · steel base Ø 45 cm
Tips: 1610 PE and PVC, flame-retardant · Lights: none (unlit) · Box: 88 × 25 × 32 cm, 7.5 kg
2Can't face decorating: a 5ft pre-lit, pre-decorated tree
It's December. You've worked all week, the loft ladder is a health hazard, and the thought of untangling lights makes you want to lie down. Good news: you can. This tree arrives already dressed and already lit, and you change the lights from the sofa.

5ft Pre-Lit Decorated Christmas Tree with Gold Baubles, Ribbons and Remote
Already decorated in gold baubles, ribbons and bows, with 150 warm white LEDs and a remote.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits you
The decorating is done for you. Gold baubles, ribbons and bows are already on the tree, so you get a co-ordinated look without an evening of hanging things.
Lights already threaded through. 150 warm white LEDs come built in, with 8 lighting modes.
A remote, so you don't have to get up. Change the lighting mode from up to 5 m away. Strictly speaking, from the sofa.
Worth knowing
It still needs shaping. The listing says to allow 30 to 45 minutes to shape the 450 tips. Less than decorating a tree from scratch, but not zero.
Remote battery not included. The remote takes a CR2025 coin battery, which isn't in the box.
It's a 5ft tree. At 150 cm tall and 90 cm across, it suits a living-room corner or a smaller room. There's room to add a topper or a few of your own pieces.
Key specs
Size: 150 cm tall · 90 cm diameter · metal stand Ø 40 cm
Lights: 150 warm white LEDs, 8 modes, remote (5 m range, CR2025 not included) · Tips: 450 PVC on hinged branches · Box: 80 × 19 × 26 cm, 4.84 kg
3Wants snow, gets drizzle: a 6ft super flocked tree
Every year you check the forecast. Every year it says 'light rain'. If you've given up waiting for a white Christmas outside, bring one in. This is the snowiest tree we sell.

6ft Super Flocked Artificial Christmas Tree – Green & White
A big, snowy 6ft tree: thick white flocking on 1338 tips, 122 cm across.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits you
It looks properly snowed on. Every branch has thick white flocking, so it reads as a snowy tree from across the room, even before you add lights.
Fuller than a standard tree. 1338 tips spread over 122 cm make it noticeably wide and full, a real centrepiece for a family living room.
Shapes up fast. Pre-attached hinges and pre-moulded branches mean the listing allows just 20 to 25 minutes to assemble.
Worth knowing
It needs floor space. At 122 cm across, plan for around 1.3 m of floor, as the listing advises. If space is tight, see number 4.
A little flocking may come off. Some flocking can shed when you first shape it, so set it up on a sheet or a hard floor.
Indoors only, and unlit. It's for indoor use, and you'll need your own lights. Warm white looks lovely against the white branches.
Key specs
Size: 180 cm tall · 122 cm diameter · folding metal stand, 45 cm base
Tips: 1338, flame-retardant, snow-flocked · Lights: none (unlit) · indoor use only · shipping weight 9.8 kg
4No floor space: a 6ft slim pencil tree
Your flat has a hallway, a living room and a sofa that already takes up most of the living room. A normal 6ft tree would mean moving the sofa into the bath. A pencil tree gives you full height in a fraction of the floor.

6ft Slim Pine Pencil Christmas Tree with Pine Cones and Red Berries
Full 6ft height in only 63 cm of width, already decorated with pine cones and red berries.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits you
Height without the width. It's 180 cm tall but only 63 cm wide, so it fits entryways, small rooms and the corner by the door.
It comes ready-decorated. 31 pine cones and 31 red berry clusters are already on, plus white-painted tips for a light frosting. It looks finished before you add a thing.
Easy to store. The trunk comes in 3 sections and the metal base folds, so it packs back into a box that's 82 × 24 × 25 cm.
Worth knowing
Check the base. The tree is 63 cm wide, but the folding base is 50 cm across, so measure your corner for both.
Allow time to shape it. The listing says 20 to 40 minutes for a full look.
Unlit. Bring your own lights. A slim set suits a slim tree. There's also a 7ft version, listed separately.
Key specs
Size: 180 cm tall · 63 cm diameter · foldable metal base Ø 50 cm
Decorations: 31 pine cones, 31 red berry clusters · Tips: 688 PE and PVC, flame-retardant · Lights: none · Box: 82 × 24 × 25 cm, 5.2 kg
5Tiny flat, big spirit: a 90 cm pre-lit tabletop tree
A studio, a house share, a first flat. There's no room for a floor-standing tree, but you still want to come home to something glowing. A tabletop tree goes on the sideboard, the desk or the windowsill, and it doesn't need a socket.

90 cm Pre-Lit Flocked Tabletop Christmas Tree with 70 Warm White LEDs
A 90 cm snowy tree with 70 warm white LEDs that runs on batteries, so no trailing cables.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits you
No socket needed. It runs on 4 AA batteries, so it can sit on a console table, a sideboard or an office desk without a cable across the room.
Already lit. 70 warm white LEDs give a steady glow. They don't flash.
Snowy and cosy. 488 snow-flocked tips and a wood-effect base give it a frosty, homely look, and it's one piece, so set-up is simple.
Worth knowing
Batteries not included. You'll need 4 × AA batteries.
Wider than you'd think. It's 90 cm tall and 69 cm across at the widest branches, though the base is only 19.5 cm. Check the surface is deep enough.
Some shaping. The listing allows 15 to 35 minutes to fluff the branches.
Key specs
Size: 90 cm tall · 69 cm diameter · wood-effect base Ø 19.5 cm
Lights: 70 warm white LEDs, steady · Power: 4 × AA batteries (not included) · Tips: 488 snow-flocked, flame-retardant · Box: 79 × 22 × 25 cm, 5.2 kg

Slim, flocked or pre-lit: which artificial Christmas tree do you need?
Most tree decisions come down to three questions.
- Full or slim? A full 6ft tree is usually 80 to 120 cm wide or more. A slim or pencil tree keeps the height but can be half that width. If your tree has to share a corner with a sofa, a door or a radiator, measure the width first, not the height.
- Green or flocked? A flocked tree has white "snow" on the branches. It looks wintry even unlit, and white or warm white lights glow beautifully against it. The trade-off: a little flocking can come off when you first shape it.
- Pre-lit or unlit? Pre-lit trees save the most annoying job of the season, but you're living with the lights they come with. Unlit trees let you choose your own lights and colours, and swap them in future years.
Rule of thumb: if you love decorating, buy the shape you want and leave it unlit. If you'd rather not, a pre-lit or pre-decorated tree does the work for you.
Three things to measure before you buy a Christmas tree
Ceiling height
Most UK ceilings are about 2.3 to 2.4 m. A 180 cm tree leaves plenty of room for a star, but remember the stand adds a little height.
Width at the widest point
The width is the diameter at the bottom branches. Our five go from 63 cm (the pencil tree) to 122 cm (the super flocked), so measure the corner, not just the floor in front of it.
A socket, or not
Pre-lit trees need power. Our tabletop tree runs on 4 AA batteries, so it can go anywhere. For unlit trees, check how far your own lights need to reach to a socket.
What we left out, and why
Real trees. We only sell artificial ones, and a real tree is a different decision: needles, watering and a trip to the tip in January.
Very tall trees. 7ft and taller trees need a high ceiling and a big room. The Geneva fir and the pencil tree both come in a 7ft version if you have the space.
Outdoor and light-up decorative trees. Those are for porches and front gardens, which is a different guide: Which Christmas house are you?
Not quite your tree? Browse all our Christmas trees, or go straight to pre-lit trees, pencil trees or white and flocked trees.
Artificial Christmas trees: frequently asked questions
What size Christmas tree do I need?
Measure the ceiling height and the floor space. For a typical UK ceiling of about 2.3 to 2.4 m, a 6ft (180 cm) tree leaves room for a topper. Then check the width: our 6ft trees range from 63 cm wide (pencil) to 122 cm wide (super flocked).
What is a pencil Christmas tree?
A tall, very narrow tree. Ours is 180 cm tall but only 63 cm wide, so it gives you full height in a hallway, a small room or a tight corner. The folding base is 50 cm across.
Do flocked Christmas trees shed?
A little, at first. Our super flocked tree's listing says some flocking may come off when you first shape the branches, so set it up on a sheet or a hard floor.
Are pre-lit Christmas trees worth it?
If you'd rather not untangle lights every year, yes. Our 5ft gold decorated tree comes with 150 warm white LEDs, 8 modes and a remote, and the 90 cm tabletop tree has 70 warm white LEDs built in. If you like choosing your own lights, an unlit tree gives you more freedom.
Can a tabletop Christmas tree work without a socket?
Ours can. The 90 cm pre-lit tabletop tree runs on 4 AA batteries (not included), so there's no cable to trail across the room.
How long does it take to put up an artificial tree?
Mostly it's the shaping. The listings allow 15 to 35 minutes for our tabletop tree, 20 to 25 minutes to assemble the super flocked tree, and up to 50 minutes to fluff the 1610-tip Geneva fir.
Can I add my own decorations to a pre-decorated tree?
Yes. The listing for our gold decorated tree says there's room to add a topper or extra pieces.
