Above: five ways to do December, and one paper-cutout friend who has tried all of them.
Came here from our "Which Christmas person are you?" video? All five are below. You can also search MERRY320 on 10grains.co.uk to see them side by side.
The short answer: pick the decoration that matches how you actually do December. All five run on batteries, so none of them needs a socket:
- 1Counting down since August (a fill-your-own advent calendar): wooden sleigh advent calendar, 24 drawers.
- 2The big kid (something that moves): musical gingerbread house with a moving train.
- 3Lives in a snow globe (glitter and a soft glow): musical snow globe lantern.
- 4Tidy, white and minimal (festive, but neutral): white wooden house advent calendar, 24 drawers.
- 5Always running late (lights that look after themselves): 60 cm flocked wreath with a timer.
Every household has a Christmas person. The one who has the advent calendar filled by the middle of November. The one who still gets excited about anything that lights up or moves. The one who would live in a snow globe if they could. The one who wants Christmas, but in a calm shade of white. And the one who has never once remembered to switch the fairy lights off.
Indoor Christmas decorations are the easy win of December: no ladders, no extension leads, no wind. Everything in this guide runs on AA batteries and sits on a shelf, a table or a door, so you can put it exactly where you'll see it.
We've matched five of ours to five Christmas personalities. Each gets the sizes that matter, the honest catches, and a real product photo next to the scene. Or take the quiz and we'll tell you which one you are.

How we matched them
We're the retailer, so we're not pretending to be neutral, and we haven't had these on our own shelves. What we did was read every listing: size, depth, lights, batteries, music and what comes in the box. Then we asked which of those matters most to each kind of Christmas person. Every figure below comes from the supplier's published specifications, and every pick gets a "worth knowing" section.
1Counting down since August: a wooden sleigh advent calendar
The present list has been in your Notes app since August. The wrapping paper is colour-coded. And you'd never buy an advent calendar someone else has filled, because then how would you know what's behind door 17? This one comes empty, on purpose.

Wooden Sleigh Advent Calendar with 24 Drawers and Lights
A wooden sleigh with 24 empty drawers to fill yourself and a little lit village on top.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits you
You choose what goes in. All 24 drawers come empty, so you can fill them with sweets, notes, coins or tiny gifts, and do it again next year.
It glows. A village scene with houses and trees sits above the drawers, lit by 10 LEDs.
It fits a shelf. It's 45 cm wide but only 10 cm deep and 31 cm tall, so it sits on a sideboard, mantel or windowsill.
Worth knowing
The drawers are small. Think chocolates, folded notes and tiny trinkets rather than full-size bars.
Batteries not included. The lights run on 2 × AA batteries.
It's plywood. Keep it away from damp windows and anything hot.
Key specs
Size: 45 W × 10 D × 31 H cm · Material: plywood
Drawers: 24, empty · Lights: 10 LEDs · Power: 2 × AA (not included)
2The big kid: a musical gingerbread house with a moving train
You're a grown adult with a mortgage and opinions about loft insulation. You will also lie on the living-room floor for twenty minutes watching a tiny train go round. This is your decoration.

Musical Gingerbread House Christmas Decoration with Moving Train
A hand-painted gingerbread house with a train that goes round its base, warm lights and eight Christmas tunes.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits you
Something actually moves. A miniature train rotates around the base of the house, which is exactly as mesmerising as it sounds.
Music, or not. A three-position switch gives you lights with music, lights only, or off. There are eight Christmas melodies.
Cosy glow. Seven warm white LEDs light the windows, and the hand-painted polyresin has white snow-effect icing all over it.
Worth knowing
It's small. At 17 × 17 cm and 22.5 cm tall, it's a shelf or side-table piece, roughly teapot-sized.
Batteries not included. It takes 3 × AA batteries.
Indoor decoration. It's made for a mantel, shelf or side table, with non-slip feet to protect the surface.
Key specs
Size: 17 W × 17 D × 22.5 H cm · Material: hand-painted polyresin
Lights: 7 warm white LEDs · Sound: 8 melodies, lights-only mode · Power: 3 × AA (not included)
3Lives in a snow globe: a musical snow globe lantern
You watch the same Christmas films every year and still cry at the same bits. You own at least one jumper with a reindeer on it. If December could be lived inside a snow globe, you'd move in. This is the next best thing.

Musical Snow Globe Lantern with Swirling Glitter and Lights
A bronze-tone lantern where glitter swirls around little snowmen and trees, with warm light and eight melodies.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits you
The glitter moves. Glitter swirls around the snowmen and Christmas trees inside, like a snow globe you don't have to shake.
Bedside-friendly. Switch between music and lights, or lights only, so it can glow quietly by the bed.
Small footprint. It's 16 × 9.3 cm at the base and 25 cm tall, so it fits a bedside table, shelf or desk.
Worth knowing
Batteries not included. It takes 3 × AA batteries.
Keep it level. Place it on a stable, flat surface, as the instructions say.
It's a lantern, not glass. It's made from acrylic and PP, which is lighter than a glass snow globe.
Key specs
Size: 16 L × 9.3 W × 25 H cm · Material: acrylic, PP · bronze tone
Lights: warm white · Sound: 8 looping melodies or lights only · Power: 3 × AA (not included)
4Tidy, white and minimal: a white wooden house advent calendar
Your living room is mostly white, slightly beige and entirely free of clutter. Red and green tinsel makes your eye twitch. You want Christmas, but quietly, in a colour that matches the skirting boards.

White Wooden House Advent Calendar with 24 Drawers and Lights
A white wooden house with 24 identical white drawers and a softly lit white village in the roof.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits you
White on white. White drawers, white house, white village: it looks festive without fighting a neutral room.
Fill your own. Like number 1, all 24 drawers come empty, ready for treats or notes.
Soft light. 10 LEDs light the little village scene in the top section.
Worth knowing
It's taller than the sleigh. At 42 cm tall and 39 cm wide, it needs a bit of height on a console or shelf, but it's only 9 cm deep.
Batteries not included. The lights run on 2 × AA batteries.
Small drawers. Best for sweets, folded notes and small trinkets.
Key specs
Size: 39 W × 9 D × 42 H cm · Material: plywood, white
Drawers: 24, empty · Lights: 10 LEDs · Power: 2 × AA (not included)
5Always running late: a 60 cm flocked wreath with a timer
You leave the house with toast in your mouth and one arm in your coat. You've never once remembered to switch the fairy lights off. The timer on this wreath remembers for you.

60cm Flocked Pre-Lit Christmas Wreath with Timer
A snow-dusted 60 cm wreath with warm white lights, silver-tone glitter and a timer.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits you
The timer does the remembering. Switch the timer on and the lights look after themselves, so you're not the one leaving them glowing all night.
Frosty, not fussy. White-dusted branches and silver-tone glitter give a snowy look that suits most front doors and walls.
No socket needed. It runs on batteries, so it can hang on an inside door or a wall with no cable.
Worth knowing
Indoor use. The listing describes it for an indoor door or wall, so hang it inside.
Batteries not included. It takes 3 × AA batteries.
It's a proper size. At 60 cm across, it needs a clear patch of door or wall. Measure first if your door has glass or a letterbox in the way.
Key specs
Size: Ø 60 × 8 H cm · Material: PE, metal
Lights: warm white LEDs (35 on the listing's photos) with timer · Power: 3 × AA (not included)

Fill-your-own advent calendar: what fits in 24 little drawers?
Both of our wooden advent calendars come empty, which is the whole point: you choose what's behind each door, and you can use them again next year. The drawers are small, so think little:
- Sweets: individually wrapped chocolates, a few jelly sweets, a chocolate coin.
- Notes: a folded joke, a clue for a treasure hunt, a "you get to pick the film tonight" voucher.
- Tiny things: a sticker, a hair clip, a mini eraser, a coin for the piggy bank.
- For grown-ups: a tea bag, a mini lip balm, a love note, a "dinner's on me" ticket.
Rule of thumb: if it doesn't fit in a matchbox, it won't fit in the drawer. Fill it by 30 November and keep a small bag of spares for the days you forget to restock.
Three things to check before you buy indoor Christmas decorations
Shelf depth
Our five are 8 to 17 cm deep, so most mantels, windowsills and bookshelves will take them. Measure the gap above the shelf for the taller ones (up to 42 cm).
Batteries
All five run on AA batteries, and none include them. Buy a pack with the decoration: the advent calendars take 2 each, the rest take 3.
Timing
Advent starts on 1 December. If you want a fill-your-own calendar ready in time, order with enough delivery time to fill it on the last weekend of November.
Other good options
A smaller gingerbread village. Our musical gingerbread house with 12 LEDs has gingerbread figures and trees around it instead of a train.
A Santa postbox. For a house with children, our white Letters to Santa postbox takes letters up to A5.
More wreaths. Browse our pre-lit Christmas wreaths for other sizes and styles.
What we left out, and why
Ready-filled advent calendars. We only sell refillable ones. If you want chocolate already inside, a supermarket calendar does that job.
Outdoor decorations. Inflatables and light-up reindeer need sockets and weather notes, so they're in a different guide: Which Christmas house are you?
Christmas trees. A bigger decision with its own measurements: Which Christmas tree are you?

Indoor Christmas decorations and advent calendars: frequently asked questions
Are these advent calendars already filled?
No. Both our wooden sleigh and white house advent calendars have 24 empty drawers for you to fill with small treats or notes, and you can reuse them every year.
What can I put in a wooden advent calendar?
Small things: individually wrapped chocolates, folded notes, coins, stickers or tiny trinkets. If it fits in a matchbox, it will probably fit in a drawer.
Do these Christmas decorations need to be plugged in?
No. All five run on AA batteries (not included): 2 for each advent calendar and 3 for the gingerbread house, the snow globe lantern and the wreath.
Can I turn the music off on the gingerbread house?
Yes. It has a three-position switch: lights with music, lights only, or off. The snow globe lantern also has a lights-only setting.
Does the flocked wreath have a timer?
Yes. The 60 cm flocked pre-lit wreath has warm white LEDs and a timer, and runs on 3 AA batteries. The listing describes it for an indoor door or wall.
How big is the snow globe lantern?
It's 16 cm long, 9.3 cm wide and 25 cm tall, about the size of a bedside alarm clock, so it fits a bedside table, shelf or desk.
When should I buy an advent calendar?
Before the end of November, so it arrives in time to fill before 1 December.
