Above: five fireside habits, five fireplace accessories, and one paper-cutout friend who has all five habits.
Came here from our "Which fireside person are you?" video? All five fireplace accessories are below. You can also search FIRE324 on 10grains.co.uk to see them side by side.
The short answer: the right fireside accessory depends on what you actually do at the fire. Match it to your habit:
- 1Lights it every night (logs, kindling, matches): copper log and kindling bucket set.
- 2Can't stop poking it (four tools on a stand): Duchess companion set with chrome handles.
- 3Sparks? Not on my rug (mesh on four faces): Gothic arch fire screen.
- 4Does it the old-fashioned way (shovel included): pewter coal bucket.
- 5Sweeps before guests arrive (37 cm tall): pewter hearth tidy set.
Every house with a fireplace has one of these people. The one who lights it every single night, whatever the weather. The one who can't walk past without giving it a poke. The one who watches every spark like it's heading straight for the new rug. The one who still does it the old-fashioned way. And the one who sweeps the hearth spotless before anyone's allowed through the door.
Most fireplaces have at least two of them, usually arguing about whether the fire needs another log.
We've matched five of our fireside accessories to five fireside habits, with sizes, weights, honest catches and a real product photo next to each scene. Or take the quiz and we'll match one to your fire.

How we matched them
We're the retailer, so we're not pretending to be neutral. What we did was read every listing: sizes, weights, what's in the set, finishes and the safety notes. Then we matched each piece to a fireside habit you'll recognise. Every figure below comes from the supplier's published specifications, and every pick gets a "worth knowing" section.
1Lights it every single night: a copper log and kindling bucket set
The heating's off, the fire's on, and it's on every single night from October to April. This person wants logs, kindling and matches in one place, ready to go.

Copper Log & Kindling Bucket Set with Matchstick Holder
Three copper-finish pieces: a log bucket and a kindling bucket with cut-out lettering, plus a slim holder that keeps long matches upright.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits them
Everything in one place. Logs, kindling and long matches sit together by the fire, so lighting it is one trip, not three.
No muddling them up. The buckets have cut-out LOGS and KINDLING lettering and cut-out handles.
Light to move. The whole set weighs 1.3 kg, so it is easy to shift when you sweep the hearth.
Worth knowing
An evening of logs, not a week. The log bucket is 33 × 33 cm and 30 cm high, so it holds a top-up rather than a full log store.
Keep matches safe. The listing advises keeping matches out of the reach of children.
Key specs
Log bucket: 33 W × 33 D × 30 H cm · Kindling bucket: 23 × 23 × 21 cm · Match holder: 7 × 7 × 24 cm (height with matches)
Material: copper-finish metal with black interiors · Total weight: 1.3 kg
2Can't stop poking it: a Duchess companion set with chrome handles
Every fire has one: the person who can't walk past without giving it a little nudge. The fire was fine. It's always fine. They poke it anyway.

Black Duchess Companion Set with Chrome Handles – 48cm
A poker, tongs, shovel and brush hanging from a black stand with a heavy domed base, all with polished chrome handles.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits them
A tool for every fiddle. Poker, tongs, shovel and brush, so moving a log, lifting one back in and tidying up are all covered.
Stays put. The tools hang from a stand with a heavy, domed black base.
A bit of sparkle. Polished chrome handles and a matching finial against black metal suit modern and traditional fireplaces.
Worth knowing
Compact, not grand. At 48 cm tall and 13 × 13 cm across, it suits the side of a hearth or stove rather than a huge inglenook.
Tools can get hot. Left near an open fire or stove they warm up, so let them cool before handling.
Key specs
Overall size: 13 W × 13 D × 48 H cm · Weight: 1.8 kg
Includes: poker, tongs, shovel and brush on a stand · Material: black metal with chrome-finish handles
3Sparks? Not on my new rug: a Gothic arch fire screen
New rug, open fire, one stray spark. This person has done the maths and isn't having it. The screen goes in front of the fire before anyone gets comfortable.

Gothic Arch Fire Screen in Antique Pewter – 55cm
A box-shaped fire screen with slim pointed Gothic arches, fine mesh on the front, sides and top, and a carry handle, in antique pewter.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits them
Mesh on four faces. Fine mesh on the front, both sides and the top helps catch sparks from every direction.
Easy to lift aside. The carry handle on top means you can move it when you need to tend the fire.
Detailed, not fussy. The slim arches and antique pewter finish suit period and modern rooms.
Worth knowing
It is not a child or pet guard. A fire screen helps catch sparks and embers. Never leave an open fire unattended.
Measure your opening. It is 55 cm wide and 21 cm deep, so check it covers the front of your fire.
It gets hot. Standing close to a fire, the metal warms up. Let it cool before moving it.
Key specs
Overall size: 55 W × 21 D × 65 H cm · Weight: 5 kg
Material: metal frame and mesh in an antique pewter finish · Mesh to front, sides and top, with carry handle
4Does it the old-fashioned way: a pewter coal bucket with its own shovel
Wingback chair, carriage clock, a proper fire like the one at their grandparents'. This person does it the way it's always been done, with a scuttle on the hearth.

Antique Pewter Finish Coal Bucket with Wooden Handle Shovel – 44cm
A steel coal bucket in an antique pewter finish with a curved carry handle, embossed side mounts and its own wooden-handled shovel.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits them
Shovel included. The turned wooden-handled shovel slots neatly inside the bucket.
A proper scuttle shape. Curved carry handle, decorative embossed mounts on each side and a stepped base.
Not just for coal. The listing suggests it can double as a log holder or a planter.
Worth knowing
No hot ashes. Do not put hot ashes or embers in the bucket.
Check your hearth. It is 30 × 28 cm and 44 cm tall, so make sure there is room beside the fire.
Key specs
Overall size: 30 W × 28 D × 44 H cm · Weight: 2.6 kg
Material: steel in an antique pewter finish · Shovel with turned wooden handle
5Sweeps the hearth before anyone's allowed in: a pewter hearth tidy set
Guests at seven, and the hearth must be spotless by five to. This person sweeps up every speck of ash before the doorbell goes, then pretends it always looks like that.

Hearth Tidy Set in Antique Pewter Effect – 37cm
A hand brush and shovel with ornate turned handles in an antique pewter-effect finish. The brush rests against the shovel as one tidy piece.
See it at 10GrainsWhy it suits them
Small and quick. A hand brush and shovel, 37 cm tall, for a fast sweep before anyone arrives.
Takes up almost no room. At 14 × 10 cm it suits a wood burner or a narrow hearth, and can hang from a hook.
Pretty enough to leave out. Ornate turned handles in an antique pewter effect.
Worth knowing
Cold ash only. Make sure ash is completely cold before sweeping it up.
Just the two tools. It's a brush and shovel, not a full companion set. For a poker and tongs too, see number 2.
Key specs
Overall size: 14 W × 10 D × 37 H cm · Weight: 1.2 kg
Material: steel in an antique pewter-effect finish, black bristles

Companion set or hearth tidy: which do you need?
Both live beside the fire, but they do different jobs:
- A companion set (number 2) usually has four tools on a stand: a poker and tongs for moving logs or coal while the fire is going, plus a shovel and brush for clearing up afterwards.
- A hearth tidy (number 5) is just a brush and shovel. It is for sweeping up cold ash, and it takes up much less room.
- Open fires tend to need tending, so a poker and tongs earn their place. Many wood-burner owners find a brush and shovel is all they use day to day.
Rule of thumb: if you move logs around while the fire is lit, choose a companion set. If you only clear up when it's out, a hearth tidy is enough.
Three things to check before you buy fireside accessories
Hearth space
Buckets and stands sit beside the fire, not in front of it. Number 1's log bucket is 33 cm across; number 2's stand is 13 cm.
Fire opening
Measure the width of your fire opening before choosing a screen. Number 3 is 55 cm wide and 65 cm tall.
Heat and safety
Tools and screens warm up near a fire. Sweep only cold ash, keep hot ash out of the coal bucket, and remember a fire screen is not a child or pet guard.
Other good options
A bigger fire screen. The large antiqued silver three-panel mesh fire screen is 85 cm wide, made for inglenooks and wide surrounds.
The log set in black. The black log and kindling bucket set is the same idea as number 1 in a darker finish.
Matches to go with it. The antique pewter match holder with 60 long matches stands on the mantel or hearth.
A companion set in pewter. The traditional fireside companion set in antique pewter matches numbers 3, 4 and 5.
What we left out, and why
Child and pet guards. Our fire screens help catch sparks, but none of them is sold as a child or pet guard. If you need one, look for a guard sold specifically for that job.
Outdoor log stores. Storing a winter's worth of logs is a different job. Everything here is sized for the hearth.
